Reflection test What is a refractive test? A refractive test is usually given as part of a routine eye exam. You can also call a test of vision. This test tells your eye doctor exactly what prescription you need in your glasses or contact lenses. Normally, a value of 20/20 is considered an optimal or perfect vision. Individuals with 20/20 vision can read letters that are 3/8 of an inch of height at 20 feet away. If you don't have a 20/20 vision, you have what's called a refractive error. A reactive error means that the light is not bending properly when it passes through the lens of the eye. The refractive test will tell your doctor what prescription lens you should use to have a 20/20 vision. This test tells your doctor if you need prescription lenses, as well as what prescription lens you need to see correctly. Test results are used to diagnose the following conditions: Test results can help diagnose the following conditions: Healthy adults under 60 years of age who are not experiencing vision problems should have a refraction test each. Children must have a refractive test every one to two years, starting at no later than 3 years. If you currently wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, you must have a refractive test every one to two years. This will allow your doctor to find out what recipe is needed as your eyes change. If you are having problems with your vision between the tests, you should see your eye doctor for another refractive test. If you have you should have an eye exam every year. Several eye conditions are associated with diabetes, such as and . According to , people with diabetes have a higher risk of blindness than other Americans. If you're finished or have a family history of glaucoma, you should also have a refraction test every year. Glucoma occurs when the pressure accumulates in the eye, damaging the retina and the optical nerve. Regular exams will help your eye doctor detect glaucoma and other eye conditions associated with aging and, if possible, treat them early. Your doctor will first evaluate how the light bends as you move through your cornea and the lens of your eyes. This test will help your eye doctor determine if you need corrective lenses and, if so, what kind of recipe you need. Your doctor may use a computerized refractor for this part of the test, or they can simply shine a light in your eyes. In the computerized test, you look through a machine that measures the amount of light reflected by your retina. Your doctor can also do this without the help of a machine. In this case, they will shine a light in each of their eyes and look at the amount of light that is rebounding from their retina to measure their reactive score. Then your doctor will determine exactly what prescription you need. For this part of the test, you will be sitting in front of a team called Phoroptor. This looks like a big mask with holes for your eyes to look. On a wall of about 20 feet in front of you will be a graph of letters. For children who are not yet able to identify cards, your doctor will use a chart with small pictures of common articles. Testing one eye at a time, your eye doctor will ask you to read the smallest row of the letters you can see. Your doctor will change the lenses in the Phoroptor, asking you every time the lens is clearer. If you are not sure, ask your doctor to repeat the options. When your eye doctor has finished trying one eye, they will repeat the procedure for the other eye. Finally, you will find the combination that comes closer to giving you 20/20 vision. Regular eye exams are crucial to maintain the health of your vision. They are a routine part of a visit to the eye doctor and do not require preparation of your part. They can help your doctor diagnose and treat conditions such as glaucoma and determine the need for remedial lenses, among other things. Healthy adults should have a refraction test every two years, while children need them every one or two years starting at 3 years. Last medical review on July 2, 2018Read this following
